The batch of 20-21 !

The unprecedented time and how to make it extraordinary

Hi guys,

I have written a short article specially for teenagers of the covid era.

2020 and 2021 have been sad and devastating years for so many of us. The pictures we saw during the second wave of covid were heartbreaking for all of us. More than that excessive news and videos broke us from inside. There was not a single day when the sad news was not coming on our what's app. In fact, whenever a phone used to ring at some unusual time our heart used to skip a beat.

Despite getting bad news every day, we showed some outstanding courage and fought very well to come out of that phase.

I am a career counsellor and generally, I speak with 15-20 students and their parents every day over zoom these days. In the last three months, I have seen a typical sense of fear and anxiety among most of the students.

The students I generally Interact with are from class 10th to graduates. The students I used to meet during pre covid era were less stressed though they had regular schools and colleges in comparison with students who are trying their best to get used to online classes. Though teachers, schools, and colleges are trying to give their best in the online format, still students are getting demotivated because of many reasons.

The first reason is the hopelessness and fear of not going back to school and college anytime soon.

The school events, college festivals, Sports festivals are not only designed to keep the students engaged in extracurricular but also helps the students in their 360-degree mental growth. When students participate in a competition they win or lose, when they win, they want to win again and keep the momentum going, and when they lose they start preparing again for the victory.

Anyways, there is so much to write about what went wrong due to covid, but we can try what to do to make life better during the time of the lockdown and when you know things are not going to get better any soon.

  1. Healthy food & Little exercise

This is the most important thing to keep your body healthy. Eat less and take a balanced diet. Too much junk and very less physical activity make you more irritated. Try to have a very healthy diet and make sure you are taking a good sleep of 7 to 8 hours.

No matter how busy you are, how bad your day was, do not miss 30 mins of light or moderate exercise. You can brisk walk, dance, do yoga or do a little run on your terrace but challenge yourself every day. Try to burn a minimum of 500 calories by exercise. Burning calories not only makes your body feel fresh but also helps to grow your brain cells.

Try to wear a health watch and challenge yourself every day.

2. Avoid too much of social media.

Social media is the most powerful tool of communication these days but excessive of any thing leads to another disaster. And better we realise this early that its a pandemic which is already here which has become one of the main reason of depression and stress these days among the young generation.

The social media post and stories have become a rat race to prove that your life is better than the others. Getting likes and comments is becoming a national issue among us. First posting a picture and the endless wait for getting attention is not something you should be worrying about.

Go out on your balcony, see the flying birds, check the joggers of your locality, talk to your parents, listen to the old stories from your grandparents, make every moment memorable.

You are already spending a lot of time on screen for your regular classes, try to minimize the social media activities by a maximum of 1 hour a day which I am sure is 1/5th of what you are using now.

Social media is addictive and it has been designed to target your precious time and you know what? These social media giants are winning and we are losing.

There is no vaccine for this disease, the only way is Prevention.

Don't tell me after 5 years that you haven't been warned!

3. Chose a creative way to engage yourself

God has given at least one superpower to every one of us, it's just that we need to figure out that hidden super talent and try to take it out.

You like photography, take your mobile camera, click and write the story behind it.

You like to write poems, take out the pen and paper today, no matter how bad you write, start writing a poem.

You like doodling, draw whatever you like, don't think what others will feel about it.

In the era of like share subscribe and comment, you have started feeling that do not attempt if you are not perfect.

Even if your art makes one person happy, consider yourself a great artist.

You or your art cannot make everyone happy, but even it makes you happy, you must pursue that passion.

That is one of the best ways to come out of this depressing time.

Make your own website, create a new blog but do something extra to engage yourself than only checking your friend's status updates and stories.

Your mental health is the most important thing you have to focus on. Most of you don't know but you are already showing the symptoms of entering into the tunnel of depression and loneliness and like any normal tunnel it has a beginning and an end. Speak with your parents and siblings, consider them your best friends forever, they are the best drivers of your life to take you out from this dark tunnel.

Life is beautiful and I am sure this time will surely pass. Try to keep yourself away from negativity, excessive news, and binge-watching of web series.

The sky is yours, fly as high as you can.

The land is yours, run as much as you can.

Your life is beyond your mobile phones.

Keep yourself healthy because if you are healthy, I am sure you will surely do something good with your life.

If you are facing any issues in concentrating on your regular life and feeling lost, feel free to reach out to me. I will try my best to help you in my personal capacity.
